4 Reasons to Have Your Dryer Vent Cleaned
How to Safely Clean a Clogged Dryer Vent
1. Unplug the Dryer
Always disconnect the dryer from the power so that one may assure oneself of their safety before embarking on any cleaning job.
2. Disconnect the Dryer
Gently pull the dryer away from the wall for accessibility of the vent hose.
The vent hose from the back of the dryer is to be disconnected. You may be required to unscrew or loosen a clamp.
3. Vacuum the Vent Hose
Use a vacuum cleaner with a long hose attachment. Gently suck out any lint and other debris in the vent hose, working your vacuum into the vent before pulling it back to get as much as possible off.
4. Clean the Vent Duct
If the vent duct extends beyond your reach with a vacuum, use a dryer vent cleaning brush. These are brushes designed to bend and insert into the duct and clean out the collected lint inside. Insert the brush inside the vent and then twist to scrub off the debris.
You can also get a vent cleaning kit which may include rods for further access in the ducts.
5. Check the Vent Hood
On the outside, check the vent hood. Clean it out, removing leaves or nests that may have accumulated and clogged it. If necessary, use a brush or wipe clean.
6. Reassemble and Test
Reattach the vent hose to the dryer, making sure it is tightly attached.
Push the dryer back into its correct position, taking care not to kink or bend the vent hose in any way because this can restrict airflow.
Plug the dryer back in and run it for a few minutes to ensure the airflow is improved.
7. Regular Maintenance
Clean your dryer vent at least once a year, more often if you notice it is taking longer to dry clothes or if the dryer is hotter than usual. Regular maintenance will prevent building up lint and reduce any fire hazard.
Cleaning your clogged dryer vent safely and efficiently involves the following steps; if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, make sure to hire a professional to do it for you.
